Why is Obedience Big Deal

November 11, 2011, 0 Comments

The Lord requires of it. Proverbs 19:16 – He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die. Deut 28:1 – If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. 2 Chron 31:21 – In everything that he undertook in the service of God’s temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered. Proverbs 2 : Moral Benefits…

Grace-filled Parenting

I have found myself making a journey few days ago for the sole quest of seeking mercy. It was an actual 3-hour journey end to end. I was inundated with the mission the very moment I’m up from my bed. Dressing up, walking to the bus-stop, and all along the journey, there is only one thing on my heart. Seek mercy. The story was that I was waiting to sign up for a particular class which I was so looking forward to, only to find out that I had missed the deadline and hence my registration was rejected. Not once,…

Threat or Bribery

Recently we have fallen into the trap of “Threat” parenting. It looks like this, “If you don’t sleep now, I’m going to send you out!” This method is behaviouristic in nature. It is however contrary to the sowing and reaping principle in the Bible. Ps Tedd Tripp quoted in his book, Instructing a child’s heart under the topic ‘Rewards/Punishments of Behaviourism’ of which goals are often driven by consequences as an external attempt to change behaviour – what will appeal to the child enough to be a motivator or sting enough to be a deterrent. Popular behaviourist tactics such as…

Melt-downs

Yesterday, I brought my boys toIKEA. At a little play area inside the cafe, a familiar sentence caught my attention. I turned around to see a little girl who said, “I don’t want other people!” I had to smile and look towards the little girl’s mother. I wanted to get this in to confirm my suspicion. “Is she three?” My 3-yr old has fully entered the big ego-centric phase. A good thing to know he is capable of doing more but cognitively still immature. The scenario is such that he would suddenly developed a liking for a certain style of…

Give Kids Big Truth to Grow Into

I first learnt this from Tedd Tripp, author of “Instructing a Child’s heart”. It was much needed as my three-year-old has grown so much cognitively and emotionally. I was searching for lessons for his misbehaviour that will ‘root’ him for life. I have been trying to give my best reasons for discouraging every wrong actions or behaviour when my toddler was about two-year-old. He was able to understand what I say, beyond the fundamental “No, don’t touch this” instruction. But my best is still not enough. At about two and a half to three year old, children start to be…
