Makeup so good even for preggers!

January 10, 2015, 0 Comments

Are you pregnant or simply just a modern woman looking for good, clean makeup? Well, I looked everywhere but found nothing as good as Jane Iredale Skin Care Mineral Makeup! Not every mineral makeup is created equal, so it is important to look at the ingredient list.

Being heavily pregnant, I look every bit t.i.r.e.d. When people say that pregnant women glow, I actually feel otherwise. Especially in my first and third trimester, all I could think of is my bed! (You can’t see my eye bags and dark circles, which is precisely why I am sitting so far from the camera!)

The next best thing for a quick fix has to be makeup, looks-wise. I also take chinese herbs suitable for pregnancy to perk me up. I was looking around for a good mineral makeup as mine is quickly finishing. Since not all mineral makeup is created equal, I wanted something safe for pregnancy as well as for every-day use for average women. I need something simple, fast, brush-and-go type.

Despite googgling around, I could not find any reviews for make up suitable for preggers. Imagine my surprise when I visited Nouri Face and Body Concepts for my prenatal massage and discovered them carrying this beautiful mineral makeup by Jane Iredale!

Harmful ingredients found in traditional makeup and why we need to avoid it at all cost!

My switch from traditional make up to mineral make up happened many years ago. Various harsh and often harmful ingredients that is found in traditional make up such as talc, chemical dyes, chemical preservatives, synthetic fragrance and petroleum  puts me off.

Talc (Talcum powder) – I was told that talc is a chemical commonly used as a binder for cosmetic and to make skin look smooth and flawless. it is also traditionally used for absorbing moisture. Imagine plastering a paste on our face only to have it suck out all the moisture from the surface of our face. I am thinking of cracked lines. This causes clogging since the skin is not able to breathe. Frequent usage results in oily skin, premature aging, fine lines and aging. Yikes!

Chemical Dyes – The stuff that made our appearance pop in traditional makeup; lipsticks, blusher, eyeliner etc. all contain FD & C dyes (Food, drugs and cosmetic) dyes. The intense colours these makeup carry often contain heavy metals that cause darkening or pigmentation.

Chemical preservatives – The use of paraben has gotten a bad name recently. As research progresses, we are finding out more harmful stuff that we want to avoid! Paraben is used to lengthen shelf life and but it also targets bacterial cells. It is even said to alter human cells when applied to our body. The absorption rate is about 60%.  Assuming products containing paraben are used on our bodies everyday, we would have absorbed up to an alarming amount of paraben worth 1.4 kilograms into our body per year! Once absorbed, it goes into our blood steam and wreck havoc in our digestive system. It affects our immune system and neurotoxicity, and declines sperm count. Research shows  traces of paraben found in patients suffering from breast cancer. Time to throw out all shampoo, deodorant, skincare and makeup products that contain paraben!

Synthetic fragrance – I just found out that synthetic fragrance contains about 100 different chemicals. If that is not enough to scare you, I don’t know what will. I cannot imagine putting those stuff on my body. It irritates skin and is photosensitive – reacts to sunlight and causes pigmentation. So the next time you choose to put on perfume, make sure is it well hidden from the sunlight and if possible, use natural fragrance like pure essential oil which Nouri carries as well.

Petroleum – Petroleum is a kind or mineral oil. But it disrupts the body’s natural process in eliminating toxic and breaks down collagen in our skin, leading to premature aging. Vaseline jelly, commonly found in lip gloss contains petroleum which only gives a ‘shiny’ appearance, but in fact blocks the skin ability to breathe, resulting in drier lips.

Why I choose Jane Iredale line of mineral makeup

I was impressed by how smoothly ‘Dream Tint’, a tinted moisturizer with SPF 15 UVA/UVB glided on my skin.  Okay, there are lots of makeup that glides. But this one feels light-weight, non greasy and best part, it hydrates! I found out that Jane Iredale prides itself on being “The Skin Care Makeup”.  Their products do more than helping us look good. They help to improve our skin condition.

Dream tint is a light foundation-cum-moisturizer that gives one sheer coverage.  I use it right after I put on my toner for casual outings. There is no need to slather additional moisturizer as this product hydrates sufficiently. If you have freckles and like me, it will not provide you the full coverage, but it is good enough to look groomed. I’m using “medium light” shade.

Ingredients

Jane Iredale uses antioxidants and vitamins such as certified essential oil, and pharmaceutical grade ingredients. Their products does not contain talc, so I don’t have to touch up as the makeup does not smear, or run. Instead of using FD & C dyes, and synthetic fragrance, it uses colours, commonly known as mica, and natural scents derived from mineral rocks and organic botanical extracts.

Non-comedogenic – Jane Iredale’s foundation does not clog up pores, but allows it to breathe and function normally. I was told it is safe even to wear their foundation to sleep. They run laboratory tests to confirm this.

Sun Protection – Their range make up also came with a much coveted seal from the Skin Cancer Foundation International as an effective UVA/UVB sunscreen. In order for this seal to be approved, the manufacture must show scientific proof that its product helps in prevention of sun-induced damage for the skin. I seldom come across any cosmetics that carry this seal, the common ones are just a liner that says “SPF – 15″. SPF  is a measure of sunscreen’s ability to prevent UVB from damaging our skin. Only a product that states “Broad Spectrum” offers protection against both UVA (long wave) and UVB (short wave) rays. To understand more about UVA and UVB, please visit the SkinCancer.org

Heavy Metal Testing – All their products are tested to ensure that trace elements for metals fall below levels that allowable. I am particular about metals entering my body, especially during time of pregnancy.

Particle size – The size of minerals is important to me. This is usually the first question I ask when I research on mineral makeup. I heard that the smaller the particles, the easier it is for skin absorption. But that also means it is can penetrate the pores easily, and these particles could be harmful for us in the long run. Makeup is not meant to be ingested! If you are carrying a baby, you certainly would not want any foreign materials entering your body. The same reason, we would stay away from hair dyes. Results has shown that there are no nano size minerals present in any of Jane Iredale’s product. Yay!

Makeover

I was given some products to test-drive on my face. POMMISST Hydration Spray was used on my face in the absence of toner, as it moisturises well as a base. Its beautiful fragrant comes with ECOCERT’s Natural and Organic certification. Available in 3 different scents. It can be used anytime in the day to freshen up. Priced at S$42

Next on my face is Smooth Affair Facial Primer and Brightener. This helps the makeup stays longer. It also helps to prevent aging with a host of delicious ingredients:

  • Grapefruit Extract promotes luminosity and skin radiance.
  • Apple Extract is a skin-smoothing antioxidant that helps maintain skin’s youthful elasticity.
  • Green and White Tea Leaf Extracts and Royal Jelly are anti-aging and anti-inflammatory.
  • Aloe Leaf Juice soothes and calms the skin.
  • Algae Extract is anti-aging, firms the skin and prevents moisture loss.
  • Olive Leaf Extract promotes epidermal cell renewal.
  • Honeysuckle Extract helps to purify the skin.

Priced at S$78

I was given a thin layer of liquid mineral foundation to apply. The beads are encapsulated in a air-tight bottle, and only releases the foundation upon a slight pump. Nickname “moisture- grabber”, it helps to illuminate the skin, prevents wrinkle and premature aging. It feels really light-weight and I hardly feel any tightness or stickiness on my face. It contains hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C and Coenzyme Q10, aloe vera, white tea etc. Priced at S$88

I was given enlighten concealer for my freckles and dark eye circles. All I needed to do is to dab a little on the cheek and under the eye area. Delicate areas are especially sensitive to heavy substance but this one has its signature feather light feel. I don’t think it sufficiently covers, as I can still see some shade of it under my eye. But it could be due to my serious sleep deprivation, having to wake up every night due to a full bladder. The gynae told me that my baby is lying on my bladder. Argh, third trimester is really tough.  This concealer not only helps to hide our dark circles, it targets pigmentation, treats puffiness and dark spots. Priced at S$54.

For better coverage, Glow Time Full Coverage BB Cream does the job wonderfully. It provides maximum coverage without the typical heaviness of other brands, yet nourishes our skin. It contains SPF and is water resistant. Imagine weddings, church services, friend’s farewell party or just a night out with dear ones. Tearing will no longer be a problem.  Your makeup stays intact.  Priced at S$78. Ingredients :

  • Grapefruit Extract promotes luminosity and skin radiance, minimizes appearance of pores and wrinkles, and may help to fade uneven pigmentation.
  • Apple Extract is a skin-smoothing antioxidant that exfoliates, refines and rejuvenates the skin.
  • Sunflower Seed Oil is rich in moisturizing vitamin E.
  • Aloe Leaf Juice soothes and calms the skin.
  • Non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, sensitivity tested, clinically tested

Last, but not least, I was recommended to use Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder as I have a combination type of skin with oily t-zone. In contrast to many traditional make up, the Loose Mineral Powder actually provides more coverage than Pure-pressed base Mineral Foundation. It comes with SPF UVA protection and is water resistant.  It is also suitable for use for those with sensitive skin. They are priced at S$92 and S$79 respectively.

On my eyes are Eye Shere Liquid Eye Shadow to give that shimmery base, dabbed with a tinge of pink from Quad Bronzer and Black/Brown Liquid Eyeliner that is chemical free. It contains essential oil that moisturises.

On my cheeks is Quad Bronzers, which is a kind of blusher. I am using Rose Dawn, which consist of shades of pink because I like subtle makeup that looks natural. The colour is derived from natural rock mineral and has added anti-oxidant properties to it. Priced at S$86

On my Lips are Lip Drink Lip Balm. This is a translucent gloss that comes with SPF UVB/UVA. It contains no petroleum. Priced at S$21. It contains:

  • Carrot seed oil to smooth, soften and soothe
  • Avocado oil to protect and moisturize
  • Coffee seed, Blackberry and green tea leaf extracts provide antioxidant benefits
  • Lemon peel oil for a delicious fresh tast

Then I applied,  Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain, Forever Pink lipstick that is free of chemical. Its colour adjust to our own body temperature and acidity. I was a little apprehensive when I first tried it because I was not sure if what shade it will take on, but I eventually took to the colour as it looks natural and not too bright on me. You could request for a sample to try if you are unsure. Priced at S$47. Contains:

  • Olive butter, avocado butter and wild rose wax soothe and soften lips
  • Rose flower wax and beeswax nourish and moisturize.

Amazingly, even with ‘heaps’ of Skin Care foundation on my face, it cleanses off easily with my usual oil cleanser.  I was surprised it was not thick, nor cakey, or greasy, leaving the skin sufficiently clean.

In fact, their products can also be cleansed without a cleanser! Jane Iredale’s Magic Mitt! I could only think of convenience when I am out on holiday, cutting down another bottle of cleanser by just bringing this mitten along. This mitten is made from specially knitted micro fibres that is many times thinner than human’s hair.  All we need to do is to wet it in lukewarm water, allowing the mitten to create a process that breaks the surface tension of the makeup oils that bond makeup to the skin.  By cleansing in upward circular motion, it gently exfoliates while retaining the natural acidity of our skin. Priced at S$29.

What to use with so many wonderful products?

In fact, for everyday use, one would only need 2 or 3 types of Skin Care foundations.

I could go with:

Liquid Mineral Foundation + Dream Tint (Causal outings) / Glow Time BB cream (Fuller coverage)

+ Amazing Base Loose Power / PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation

+ Quad Bronzer + Lip stick (optional)

I’m not a lip stick user generally, but there’s always Just Kissed Lip if you like. I simply loved the name, “just kissed”! Do you still remember your first kiss where you run to check how your lips look after that sizzling kiss?

If you are thinking of trying a little of everything before deciding on what to use for the long term. There is even a little nifty starter kit which consist of:

1) Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener 2) Warm Silk Amazing Base Loose Mineral Power 3) Warm Silk PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation 4) POMMISST Hydration Spray 5) A Mini Powder Brush all stored in an elegant travel-sized cosmetic pouch with a mirror inside.  Price: S$86
